Many years ago when I was trying to discover myself I read the book about him I think it was called “A Royal Spy,” or something similiar Can’t find it in Waterstones website . I also read historical laters about the discovery after he died. Interesting video.

I have found a copy of the book, called Royal Spy, the strange case of the Chevelier D’Eon. However, as it was published in 1965 it would be hard to find a copy now. It can be read in the British Library in London or Boston Spa (but not borrowed) and a long read , 260 pages.

There are a number of books about the Chevalier, but some of them – of course – are in French. Gary Kates who appeared in the documentary has published a book called ‘Monsieur D’Eon is a Woman’ which is available in hardback from Amazon for £22. There is also ‘The Strange Career of the Chevalier dEon de Beaumont. Minister Plenipotentiary from France to Great Britain’ by John Buchan Telfer published in 1884 which is available in the Classic Reprint Series (reproduced with notes in the margins etc.) for £14.28 as a paperback – as well as some other books.

I believe for a while the Chevalier lived in Halswell House near Bridgwater in Somerset. A friend once owned Halswell House, and was keen to tell me about this. I don’t think the National Trust are involved with Halswell House, so a pilgrimage may not be so easy. Where else did the Chevalier live in this country?

That’s interesting. I haven’t heard that, so I will try to check it out because it is not that far from where I live.
I had thought that he only ever lived in London when in Britain. Thanks, Anna.
